Researching further, I discovered the phenonenon known as 'couchsurfing'. What a fabulous way to discover a new part of the world just by getting in touch with a fellow couchsurfer, anywhere in the world and asking if you can kip on their couch. If you`re lucky and you hook up with a mutually attractive like minded guy or girl, you may have an even better time than you bargained for. Nothing wrong with that either. Little to do with volunteering in the traditional sense but you are expected to help with the chores around the home.
And then I discovered www.workaway.info one of a few websites that hook you up with individuals, projects or charities offering you accommodation and meals in return for a few hours of voluntary work.
For me, the workaway route is the perfect solution. Admittedly, you have more research to do, checking feedbacks and the like and it is possible that with some of the projects, all you're doing is providing them with cheap labour. Well, thats a risk I`m prepared to take. At the end of the day, I want to experience all the world has to offer and it`s up to me to do the research and satisfy myself that it`s all genuine. Put it this way, those volunteering opportunities that cost you money for the privellige are ok if you want everything in a package and little risk that you`ll be left to fend for yourself. The reletively safe option. (Although you still have to do a bit of research) Personally, I`d rather spend less and go with the flow. For me, the experience is far more important than the risk. And the knowlege that I have gone to the other side of the planet to try and help those who are less fortunate than I have ever been.
