Saturday 13 June. Bumrungrad International Hospital, Bangkok... Local Time 2pm...

I`ve been in trouble today.  I took it upon myself to go walkabouts as I was feeling pretty chirpy and I only get restrained by the drip feed for an hour or two twice a day now. Keeping my right leg, the one that`s had the op, as straight as possible as I`d been told, I went down in the lift to the next floor and out into the roof garden. Really nice with some spectacular views over Bangkok. I was just about to go and find the internal cafe to get a coffee when I was collared by one of my nurses. Apparently, my Doc says I should not be walking yet, so I was sent back to bed. lol. Mind you I do feel a bit knackered now I must admit, so it is probably for the best. I got the impression it was ok for me to go for short walks as I was out of bed for a short while yesterday. Obviously I was wrong. A communication problem I think. That`s my excuse anyway :)))))))))

Update from Bangkok.Thurs 11 June. Local Time: 1pm.

My friend Thip left this morning to visit her mum in northern Thailand. She stayed here at the hospital for the last two nights sleeping on the couch in my 4 person ward as friends or family of patients often do here at Bumrungrad International Hospital. She mothered me of course, making sure I had everything I needed here at the hospital. I only wish we could communicate a little easier as my Thia and her English are not good. However, we still manage to get on and have a laugh. I`m looking forward to seeing her again next week when I should be in position to walk again. Today I had a visit from the visa extension department here at the hospital and it seems I`ll be granted a further 30 day visa when my original one runs out on 15 June. This is good because, subject to my leg making a full recovery, I intend to return to the English Club in Trat in South East Thailand for a week or two to finish the work I had started there.

Update from Peter in a Bangkok Hospital... Local Time: 11am Wednesday 10 June.

What a bizarre night (Part One)... My surgeon thought I was joking when I commented to him this was like a dream turning into a nightmare. But it was, in a funny sort of way. I hadnt been asleep long when at just before midnight last night, my surgeon and a couple of nurses woke me up and started poking around at my leg. My surgeon apologised for the late hour and, looking at my leg, added, yes, I think we can do this now. Meaning my leg was ready for the next stage. He then simply started to rip off the cling film over my knee which had been there to protect the stitches and hold the two tubes which had been inserted into my knee, in place. As I screamed, he apologised and blamed my hairy legs, which, to be fair, was true. I was just being a big baby. lol. There then followed a few comings and goings to my knee with surgical instruments like knifes and scissors and scalpals, followed by the sizing up, cutting and insertion of a what I assumed to be a piece of my own skin, taken from the previous skin graft I`d had a few days ago. The leg was then bandaged up and I was told not to bend it for at least a week otherwise the whole proceedure he`d just done would fall apart. The reverse has just been told to me this morning by a nurse, by the way. I`ll no doubt find out whether to bend or not to bend in due course. All I can say is that I am glad I was laying down flat and therefore could not see what was happenning last night. Although it didn`t hurt, apart from the removal of the cling film, I could tell by the face on my guest at my bedside, that it wasn`t very pleasant.

Update from Peter. Friday 5 June Bangkok. Local Time 12.30pm

I hate this sitting and waiting around. But that`s all I can do really. Apparently my knee has to be looked at again to see if there is need for a skin graft which I had assumed had already been done on the last operation because there is now a dressing over part of my thigh as well as my leg. Then, I`ll have to build up the muscles again to enable me to walk. The physio has given me some leg exercises to do but I really need to get out and walk on it. Communication a bit of a problem here which is a little surprising for such a well known international hospital. I think I`ll put a notice on the staff notice board offering English Lessons when I get better. Anyway, hopefully not too much longer - only so much you can do laid in a bed 24hrs a day. Actually, I`ve been allowed to sit on the seat at the bedside today and am enjoying my cold orange juice straight from the fridge which Thip and Yohann bought me yesterday. ...the orange juice that is. Not the fridge. :)))))))
